EDUCATION

St. Bridget’s Parish Primary School

The Christian education of youth has always been of deep concern to the Catholic Church. In 1871 an Education Act was passed in the State of Victoria withdrawing all subsidies to religious sponsored schools and declaring that Education in this State would be “Free, Secular and Compulsory”. In reply to this the Catholic Church decided that every Parish would become financially responsible for its own school.

In 1959 St Bridget’s Primary School opened its doors for the first time to 93 pupils. This number rose to 266 in 1971. As the parish advanced in years this peak number has come down to 175 in 2005 and has remained about the same since 1976.
